Modi will return 18 thousand illegal Indians from America
The Indian government has identified 18,000 immigrants living illegally in the United States. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has planned to bring these undocumented citizens back to their country.
According to sources who spoke to Bloomberg, the Indian government is helping the new administration by identifying illegal Indians to secure visas for legal immigrants living in the country and maintain close ties with the Trump administration.
The Indian government is believed to be doing this to reduce pressure under Donald Trump. This information was informed in a report of Britain's newspaper The Guardian on Tuesday.
Many of Trump's first executive actions have been aimed at illegal immigration in the US, including declaring a state of emergency at the national border and deploying troops to the US-Mexico border.
Sources told Bloomberg that while 18,000 people of Indian origin living illegally in the US have been identified so far, the actual number is likely much higher. According to the Pew Research Center, the country has an estimated 725,000 illegal Indian immigrants. And this number makes them the third largest group after Mexico and El Salvador.
Basically, through this move, Narendra Modi is trying to maintain good relations with Trump and pacify him after assuming power. Trump has a close personal relationship with Narendra Modi and they regularly refer to each other as 'great friends'. But President Trump has also threatened to impose higher trade tariffs on India as part of his America-first policy, which would be detrimental to India, and the Modi government is seen as desperate to avoid any trade conflict.
Although the Indian government has not confirmed the number of illegal immigrants brought back, it is working closely with the Trump administration to tackle the problem of illegal immigration.
Randhir Jaiswal, spokesman for the country's Ministry of External Affairs, said, "As part of US cooperation in India, both sides are engaged in a process to curb illegal immigration." This is being done to create more opportunities for legal migration from India to the country.”
Jaiswal insists the process has already begun. He said more than 100 illegal Indians were brought back from America in October and more than 1,000 people have been brought back in the past year. A key priority of the Indian government is to preserve US H-1B visa status for skilled immigrants, particularly in the technology and engineering sectors to send more workers to the country. In 2023, about 75 percent of those coming to the United States on H-1B visas were Indians. Some Republicans have complained, however, that the visas allow foreigners to take prestigious jobs that should be available to Americans.
After Trump won, Tesla and SpaceX founder Elon Musk voiced his support for the H-1B visa program. Elon's interest led Trump to re-introduce the visa.
